DESIGNER PROFILE:
SELIM F. OZCAN
|
"It's a work of art", says Selim Ozcan of his debut product line of hand-crafted solid bronze Sultans Baths. Inspired by the grandeur of bathtubs in Turkish palaces, Ozcan set forth seven years ago to recreate them. "It was me trying to get in touch with my roots", says Ozcan, who is Turkish and French.
To ensure his creations are true replicas, he follows centuries-old methods that combine 93 percent virgin copper with seven percent tin. After the mixture is cast in a historic mold, his team of Turkish artisans hammers the tub and hand polishes it (eight times!) to give it the look of gold. "And if one has imperfections (dimples, air pockets), we start over", he says.
With such high standards to live up to, Ozcan says at one point he almost gave up. His persistence paid off. The Venetian Canyon Ranch Spa in Las Vegas already features one of the three sizes of tubs (copper is known to have healing properties) and showrooms California, Florida, New York, Montana and Texas have recently placed orders. In fact, this might be my destiny: Selim is the name of the first Sultan in the Ottoman Empire to use this bath. "It's meant to be", he chuckles.
Clockwise from top:
The Ottoman bathtub (the largest weighing 1000 pounds); the Roman bathtub (the second largest at 830 pounds); and a close-up of their claw foot. Call 877.317.0439 or log on to www.sultanbath.net
